This is a very pragmatic version of what school might be and assumes that the only things people ought to learn are things that immediately have relevance to their post-high-school life; i.e., there's no value to having a basic understanding of a variety of important subjects.

Yeah, I'd almost caveat-ed that I thought 11 was a little young to be worrying about life-planning, but I do think it's worthwhile to send kids the message that work-life balance is a factor in happiness, and it's a thing to incorporate into their ambitions.

"Pick something else" is strong, but "Holy crap, you'll be busy" might be a worthwhile comment. Shoot, I work a creative job in the tech industry and I'm having a terrible time with work/life balance and planning a family- I can't imagine a job like a surgeon.
