FWIW - ‘15 WRX 6MT, over 10,000 miles i’m consistently at 32mpg @ 75-78mph and 34-35mpg @ 65mph. My lifetime average fuel economy at 10,600 miles on the odo is 26.5, which i’d say has been 30% city/70% highway.

If the marshals have to push the car, it would be a bit tricky to steer it without the wheel in place.

It seems like something in the tire construction has changed. In the past (typically) tires would become basically useless long before they started to explode. Perhaps Pirelli have pushed the envelope slightly too far or miscalculated a parameter in the construction for this race.
