It's focus by wire, so the focus ring isn't mechanically attached to the lens body/elements. It allows progressive focusing speeds. If you want true MF in a camera that isn't a DSLR, I think your *only* choice is a Leica M9, otherwise M4/3rds with funky adapters and vintage lenses - but those adapters usually screw

The X100 has manual focus, for sure. It's a quirky feature sometimes, but it's pretty great since the viewfinder can zoom in for easier focusing.
