Nothing in Serena’s life has been easy. That’s why she’s still here and everyone else is on Tennis Channel in Liz Clairborne and too much make up. You can dismiss the competition if you want to but the fact remains Serena would have and (and occasionally in fact did: Hingis, Cljisters) eat everybody’s lunch.

Steffi was my favorite tennis player as a kid and she’s HOF, no doubt, but are you comparing what Steffi might have done with what Serena is actually doing/continuing to do? The China Open and the Family Circle Cup are nice but “in all likelihood” Serena will pass Graff and Court in Slams in the next two years:)

Shout out for naming all the black tennis players whose behavior conforms to your personal standards tho.

She hasn’t done anything (less actually) than a lot of, ahem, “other” tennis players haven’t done. McEnroe was an asshole (and I love Johnny Mack). Capriati was a pothead. Most players quit the tour because they’re tired. You know Serena almost died, right? She didn’t pull a hammy or sprain her elbow. She had a pulmonary embolism. AND she had a torn tendon in her foot. Either one of those injuries would justify hanging it up. But Serena kept playing.

This is horrible obviously so was the father like, “Better she be embarrassed than I do nothing and she goes out and gets drunk again and maybe next time hurts herself or someone else.”
