For me, I think the real problem is that a graphic rape scene — graphic meaning one that plays out with direct mention or is shown “on screen,” so to speak — tends to be exploitative along with uncomfortable and unnecessary.

It’s made palatable by rationalizing all that “love” nonsense as the inaccurate ramblings of characters in unimaginably stressful situations. I was hoping to see this in the comments! The Gormenghast books are so dense and strange while being cloaked in this almost alien comprehension of manners and duty, as if someone stuck the imaginations of Jane Austen, J.R.R. Tolkien, and James Joyce in a blender and set it gently on pulse.
