Because the addition of a battery and a motor doesn't help a diesel engine as much. Petrol engines are most efficient at high load, low RPM conditions, which is what "hybridisation" (a word I'm not sure is real) enables. Running a diesel engine in the same conditions just wouldn't bring enough of an increase in fuel…
