Agreed. Games are what got me into studying UX/UI and IA, and I always thought it was weird that there’s so little talk about that aspect of things considering it’s literally the foundation of the entire medium.

Honestly I find that Japanese games in general have pretty bad UIs. There’s a big emphasis over there on style over substance because they see the HUD as an integral part of the gameplay rather than a means to an end (probably a remnant from menu-driven JRPGS, but that’s just my speculation).

This. There are plenty of people who literally can’t afford to “take a stand” or whatever.
