The answer is largely self-evident: U.S. and Canadian labor are paid considerably higher wages, benefits and retirement than Mexican labor. Low-paid labor with weak labor protections are why corporations close up shop in the U.S. and Canada to do business in Mexico; this has been the case for decades.

After WWI—and especially after WWII—there was a lot of pressure for German Americans to assimilate to prove their loyalty.
