My neighbor had a 'listening party' when the new Bon Iver album came out. They had the CD and everything (or burned it from iTunes, it was in a CD player). I have always read to my SO's and really didn't think much of it (like someone below noted, a Sedaris short is good) - but then I found out from friends that virtually nobody reads to their SO, which I find strange.

My guess is that with iPhone they have a known hardware/software/performance expectation and can model it to work how they want. There are enough people out there to make it successful and if it is, it probably will migrate to other platforms.
