It goes back to the 2000 South Carolina primary, when Bush operatives spread the rumor he had an illegitimate black kid. And that swung the primary and the nomination. McCain has never recovered; even 2008 McCain was a shadow of his former, pre-2000 self.

He got really bitter after 2008. He was able - in spite of actually having a pretty far-right voting record - to portray himself as an aisle-bridger, and was always a congenial guest on talk shows until then, but since losing to Obama, he’s been insufferable.
