Frankly I've always thought Kubrick was overrated. Dr. Strangelove was really his only great accomplishment. I enjoyed The Shining and Clockwork Orange, but really they were glorified B-movies dripping with trippy weirdness.
And, as I understand it, many fans of the book A Clockwork Orange hated the movie.
