Is anyone really surprised or even buy that reasoning? This is pretty normal for just about any traditionally male-oriented entertainment in Japan.
But very few people would say that guy is unattractive. They might not have the exact same taste as you, but he has a symmetrical face, good hair, good skin, a confident look, etc.
Most models are considered way too skinny and not curvy enough by most guys as far as I have seen (and I believe this has played out in recent studies, although I don’t have a link off-hand to back it up). Then again you can’t really tell that from just a head-shot.
It’s about ratio, not exact hip width. The hour-glass figure is attractive at a wide range of weights.

The whole point is you don’t consciously take note of it, attraction is hardly a conscious thing where you think about attributes and decide if you like them.

Honestly when it comes to Mexican cartels and ISIS and other people who commit such wanton violence, I just want some invincible Iron Man type vigilante to go in and clean up shop.
They honestly don’t believe that it is what their kids are, they think it’s a choice influenced by immoral popular culture despite all the evidence otherwise. That of course does not excuse it, but it helps to understand how they can react to their own child in that way. They think they can talk/shock them out of it.
