Instantly unwanted at first, but roll back your average Facebook user's UI to what it was a couple of years ago and they would be pissed as hell.

Actually the majority of users are probably fine with this. That doesn't make it right, but Facebook is very much not out of touch. They know more about how and why people use Facebook than the people using it themselves!

They are not going to get enough users to pay them to support something like this at scale.

Considering pretty much every couple I know the guy is a few years older than the woman, and if you look at female profiles on OKCupid they are looking for guys 3-10 years older than them, it sounds like it goes both ways.

Keep in mind the OKCupid data also shows that those same guys only message people within the non-creepy age range.
