This doesn't apply, cars have a necessity of form to function. Smartphones have little necessity of form beyond having a screen.

Taller allows it to have a 4 inch screen. Thinner applies to not just the iPhone but all future devices using this port for the next 10 years. This will allow the iPad 4 to be thinner, the 7" iPad to be thinner, etc.

Apple TV is hardly hog-tied to iTunes. I mostly watch Netflix on it or mirror just about any content from my iPhone/iPad/iMac wirelessly.
