The problem with the native Reminder app is its UI. It takes an absurd number of clicks just to set up a notification when all that could be done on the same page.

Because all apps that do background polling on iOS use the same GPS API that Reminders does (although Reminders has a couple Apple only API features I believe, but those may be accessible to developers in iOS6).
