Kickstarter is basically a tool for demonstrating the existence of a viable customer base for many projects. It only provides some seed money to show serious investors that this project is worth putting their money into.

To gauge interest and well it might as well be a glorified pre-ordering of the game. You reserve money for it before it releases, same thing when you fund it.
