As a rule, when something like this pops up time and time again (Blink, Cone of Cold, Magic/Arcane Missle) D & D usually came up with it. Naturally they got their inspiration from elsewhere, but the ref is almost definitely to Dungeons and Dragons if it's being used in Pop culture today.
