The difference between Kickstarter and Minecraft is that in both cases the purpose is to help fund development, here it's just a "give us money to play this F2P game!"

I don't know how much better the prototype was over the final product. Only that the prototype had it's own processor and that it was able to make out fingers. I'd imagine that it was significantly more capable than what we have now. Whether it would have made any difference in the real world is another matter.
