Like someone else said, IT only has him alive temporarily, it doesn't give an alternate ending, rather it suggests that the ending given isn't the true ending. It's purpose is to explain the insane explanation of the Reaper's actions and to fill massive gaping plotholes.

You don't need a couple hundred employees and they don't have to hire them for only one day. They'd only need a couple more there than what they like to have(some stores actually have adequate numbers to handle the rush).

Target is significantly more expensive than Wal-Mart and most are only in upscale, so that's exactly what it is.

Ummm, Wal-Mart only closes once a year. Last year it closed at about 8pm or something on Christmas Eve, then reopened at about 6am the day after Christmas.

Because these stores tend to pull in millions of dollars in revenue for cities/states, especially for states/cities with sales tax. It's all about the money, friend.
