I hate to break it to you, but it’s been longer than even 8 years. Like most Kickstarter projects the work actually started before the Kickstarter campaign. Development, according to the developers themselves, actually started in 2010. So Star Citizen has been in development for at least 10 years.

Which is a pretty long time but far from unheard of when we’re talking about developing a brand new, very ambitious AAA game from scratch.

No.. the thing is they already had a plan on what they are going to make right from the get go. So in a sense the overall game direction was already decided. That’s completely different from a brand new game where designers don’t even know what’s going to look like and what’s going to be in there.

God knows what their current total is, but by 2019 CIG had collected more than the budget of GTA5, a game that was by no means less ambitious, which completed it’s full development cycle in 5 years. I don’t think you understand how development cycles work. Earlier ideas and builds are vital to what a game ultimately becomes; it’s not like they scrapped everything and came up with a brand new idea in 2014.
