I might retract my earlier statement in light of some other comments on here; it is at least partly because I don't care what new cars look like.
Excessive concern with aerodynamics is at least partly to blame. Designers often seem to take a teardrop, give it a Kamm tail of 2/3 the largest cross sectional area for stability, and then dilute that formula by the smallest amount necessary to meet packaging needs.

Well, I think it looks better than the concept, and quite handsome. The short rear overhang gives it quite the purposeful appearance.
