Even if Takei was straight Suki would have been the best choice because of previous stories, as you explain well. I think a lot of people just hate all retroactive diversity though, they want it limited to new characters. I think it really depends on the character and execution.

None of them are the “real” Iron Man or whatever though. 10 years after Tony Stark comes back will anyone remember this girl? Depends on writing and such but it will be a tough road to relevance after a short term PR boost. It always comes down to earning it with creative talent and work.

I mean you’re not wrong at all about the show, and stuff I’ve heard about his TNG efforts showed his age and limits of progressive thought. I’m just saying for the 60s television scene he certainly did more good than bad, even for women.

Gene was insanely progressive for that time, LGBT stuff just wasn’t at the forefront then. Also I’m pretty sure Duly showed attraction to women in a few eps, not that I care much. I was all for this until I read this article, now I’m really conflicted.

I bristled at the end there where you called out Roddenberry’s attitude considering how progressive he was at the time. Give the guy a break.

The confusion this is causing reminds me of how I felt when my gay sister told me she opposed gay marriage because “marriage is for straight people, I’m not trying to become straight.” That was an interesting conversation. “Minorities” don’t always have the default ideologies of their media coverage.

I would guess he meant a new major character, the movies don’t really HAVE to stay focused on the original seven. My favorite Trek is DS9 which obviously has none of these people in it.

Granted I dislike any movie that looks more CGI than real, but this one really does look ugly based on the trailers. Too CGI annnnnnd not pretty.

I watch a little Nick at Nite before bed sometimes and BFG commercials are all over that network. Obviously they were using their entire marketing budget toward kids, but weren’t smart enough to stop at 10pm?

I stopped gaming a while back but lots of nostalgia you’re tapping into. I think 1280x1024 was the “normal high res” around the early 2000s and it felt like the space age.

I remember how funny it was to me that everyone was going nuts for HD gaming when the Xbox 360 came out, since I had been playing PC games in higher resolutions for like a decade. Not putting my pinky up or anything, it’s just funny how tech is relative and usually evaluated on mainstream acceptance rather than

It’s hilarious to me that Hollywood has been using 2k finishes for theater release for years but now is pushing 4k for home viewing. That’s capitalism for you.

Yeah this pretty much. And even the few shows I watch as they broadcast I DVR and watch later. I do leave CNN on sometimes for noise and general information while I’m on the computer or whatever though.

Bluray still looks way better and I actually own it, so why wouldn’t I support it?

I actually agreed with him that ruining these women’s careers was a bit over the top, but then he went crazy. Wow.

“Political correctness” does go a bit too far sometimes, and I occasionally complain about that. Trump and this kind of B.S. is making that harder and harder to do without being lumped in with psychos though.

Doesn’t hell Dem turnout that they’re nominating someone with super high negatives themselves, and someone who turns off Independents.

As a movie only guy who thinks AoS sucks I am quite happy they’re not really concerned. I also think it’s good for the movies to stand alone in general.

One issue is that sex and relationships are a very small part of these types of movies, so a gay characters making it known they are gay somehow is often hard to write without feeling forced and perhaps out of place.

It’s a more than decent adaptation, plus Ender really does get broken and beaten down by the end, like the author wanted. I always assume the ambivalence toward that movie is more political than critical.
