Graphic novel was a term invented by marketing people to sell books and was taken up by the literary crowd so they could still look down on comic books as a medium but not having to reject a few “good” ones.

Uh okay? Like seriously what the fuck is your point here? 1984 is underpinned by fantastical silliness, is it not intelligent or an interesting look at language, modernity, and totalitarianism? Honestly what the fuck are you arguing?
Youre acting as if there is still a real distinction between most comics and graphic novels (save you know one shots and maybe a couple of other exceptions). Ive read plenty of GNs and they run the spectrum, with grim dark only being a subset of that. Just because something is serialized doesnt somehow make it more…
Because unlike you - with whatever condition it is that you claim that you are having - we actually cannot turn our brains off without experiencing death thereby making watching movies kind of impossible. Most people also dont like to be treated like idiots either, but maybe thats irrelevant if you arent thinking.
I suppose the difference here is what we believe applies as “fantastically silly”. Most people wouldn’t behave the way they’re portrayed in movies, so if that is where you’re drawing the line, you’re sucking up a lot into a single pot. I would also point out that this same society gets the chance to end the Joker…
Let me clarify a bit, because (though you quoted it) I’m not sure if you read my statement. To rehash, “Reburns” stated that “I feel like people are watching these movies for all the wrong reasons. Like, turn off your fucking brain and enjoy the superhuman slugfest for what it is, and then turn your brain back on…
By now, we should all be aware that Zack Snyder’s intentions should just be ignored. The dude can’t deliver on them. He’s really damn good at putting beautiful imagery on the screen, and not much else.
Fantastical silliness? What in the world are you talking about? Comic books have regularly tackled heavy hitting issues, and while most of the time historically they take a less serious aspect, this hasn’t been the case for 30 years! We’re not talking about a Dora the Explorer or Blues Clues movie, we’re talking about…
I hate this mentality.
You know, generally people grow out of the “jingle keys” level of enjoyment and actually need something more than loud, bright, and moving to keep their attention. I’m glad you’re able to watch schlock and get some entertainment out of it, but you won’t get any less out of it with your viewing style with a smart or…
I take movies roughly as seriously as they take themselves. Fast and Furious franchise? A brain-off fun time. This movie, on the other hand, takes itself super seriously and should be mocked appropriately.
I’m not saying that every story has to be revolutionary... I’m just saying that I don’t see why you’d be interested in the moviegoing experience at all if you’re only interested in the visuals. What do you do during the parts of the movie where they’re focused on the plot or setup? The action usually occupies a…
I’m sorry, but as an artist and writer myself that mentality really pains me. I wish less people had that mentality
I find poorly made movies boring, not fun, and tedious, even with my brain turned off. There’s a difference between well-made trash and complete crap.
I never got that mentality... if you’re only interested in the exciting visuals, why see a movie at all? You could just wait until someone uploads all the fight scenes and watch them on Youtube. If I’m actually going to go watch a film I’d like for the story to at least not be so bad that it distracts me from enjoying…
I can’t say this defies my expectations even slightly. The Snyderian answer to critiques like this will be that this film was made to adhere to DC canon, or at least Snyder’s warped interpretation of it, and that in the end he is the only way who gets it. That argument is beside the point.
DC never listens to me. I havent seen this movie but I could tell you as soon as they announced Jesse “Double Tap” Eisenberg in the role of Lex Luthor.
Come on, man, that’s unfair. Anyone who’s read “Watchmen” knows how super-faithful Snyder was when he turned Silk Spectre and Night Owl into Neo and Trinity in their fight scenes..
It’s a Zack Snyder movie. Being bad is a given. DC are idiots. Also a given.
His greatest power—and the power that makes him so interesting to read about—is his undying faith in humanity. Having more or less powers doesn't change that.
