The irony of this situation is making my head hurt.

But you can't get on a plane with the knife, or cleaver, or whatever you purloin from the restaurant. Those restaurants are in the terminal but outside of the security checkpoints. I've often remarked how I go through a full-body scan to get on a place, but beforehand they'll hand me a steak knife at the Chili's.

There aren't any TSA concerns because after a certain time, there are no more flights in or out. Having been stranded in the Atlanta airport overnight, I can tell you that you can pretty much do what you like once that last flight lands or departs.
