I agree that the pedestrian has responsibility for being aware of their surroundings and should behave accordingly, the driver has a similar, and perhaps greater responsibility, to be aware of their surroundings as they are in control of a ton or more of mass.

100% agree with this.  Pedestrians have some responsibility here to at least acknowledge their surroundings.  If you are paying attention and going with the flow of traffic/walkers, it’s very rarely an issue at all.

I have never had a problem, primarily because if I am crossing the road I am 100% staring directly at the drivers, and more specifically their wheels.
