Hah! Happily seeing four fellow atheists. It’s quite the rotation of oh so sinful extramarital sex.

Those stats are actually lower than what I learned and really don’t surprise me. It’s by far the most common sexual disorder in women. I think women generally only seek treatment if they’re experiencing distress, though I do think there could be an issue with women being distressed due to ideas about what their desire …
SSRIs are generally only more effective than placebos in people with fairly severe depression, and even then they’re often used as short-term treatments to get someone to the point that they can better respond to psychotherapy. There’s this alarming trend of general practitioners prescribing them based on a single…
OKC is pretty heavily atheist, or at least all the profiles I look at seem to be. It could be that I’m only being matched with fellow heathens based on all of my anti-religion answers to questions though. It’s gotten to the point that I straight up won’t consider anyone who belongs to any sort of organized religion.
About 90% of my time on there has been terrible, but I’ve actually found half a dozen pretty solid people on there. It took a few months, a lot of question answering to make the match % worthwhile, and filling out a lengthy profile with lots of big words and feminist concepts to scare away some of the awful people,…
I think if you pay for OKCupid you can screen emails that contain certain words. Presumably you could add things like “c” and “u” to the list and get rid of all the idiots who sent messages like “hey QT, can I c u latr?”
Yeah, sometimes I think about the alarming amount that OKCupid knows about me based on my answers to questions...like more than my own family probably knows, and about things I generally don’t really talk about.
You should have never received an HSDD diagnosis if you were content with your sex drive. Whoever diagnosed you did their job incorrectly. HSDD is specifically for women who experience distress due to their lack of desire, NOT women who happily exist with little to no sex drive.
Well put. I do think there’s also the issue that psychotherapy works exceptionally well for HSDD, so this is a fairly unnecessary intervention that is more of a side-effect riddled bandaid than actual long-term solution, created to address a problem that already has a better solution. If this is approved and things go…
I do find it interesting that this is effectively medicating a problematic thought process—something psychotherapy already addresses exceptionally well without side effects or a need for lifelong treatment. It’s pretty well established that almost all HSDD is related to some sort of environmental issue, whether it’s…
Hah I had the same thought. I suspect the mechanism of action is designed to be very slow, much like SSRIs, otherwise it could be administered once before sexytimes are desired, rather than taken regularly. Any drug that acts quickly on serotonin and dopamine would definitely have way too high an addiction potential…
In order for HSDD to be diagnosed, the woman has to exhibit marked distress as a result of her diminished libido. This also has to be an ongoing issue, not a temporary change due to life circumstances. There is a significant proportion of women who genuinely would like to be having more sex, but are having issues with…
The ongoing nature of the treatment is definitely concerning based on the mechanism of the medication. I’m mostly worried that this will become the first line of treatment for HSDD, which is what has happened for most psychological disorders—even in cases that psychotherapy has been shown to be more effective. The…
This would be prescribed to women who seek treatment for their arousal issues. In order for HSDD to be diagnosed, low libido must be causing marked distress in the individual. Women who are happily celibate aren’t good candidates for this intervention.
Yeah bipolar disorder is not a risk factor for violence. I think a manic episode with psychotic features could amplify some problematic thought patterns to the point of delusions, which could be paired with a separate violent predisposition and lead to the sort of bizarre violent behavior he exhibited.
I loved Pennsatucky’s backstory, she went from a character I sort of hated in some ways (though she has always been entertaining) to one of the most relatable, sympathetic characters for me. Boo’s intervention was super problematic, but quite powerful and clearly got through to Pennsatucky, which was needed. It was…
I have to get myself out of the house and to a place that is strictly for work. For me coffee shops have managed to remain a place I always get serious stuff done. I know other people who have to go to an office/the library or somewhere a bit more strict in their minds. I give myself a rule about leaving my house by X…
Facebook suggested my grandma to me even though we don’t share our last name, I grew up several states away from her, and she had just made her profile so we had no mutual friends. This was a few years ago, so I can only assume Facebook technology has since gone from cataloging family trees to compiling lists of…
I just finished All the Light We Cannot See, which was the most stunningly gorgeous book I’ve read in a very long time. I’ve now acquired everything else Anthony Doerr has ever written just so I can bask in the beauty of his prose just a little longer.
