I always thought it was because it was PJ Hogan’s theme - the obsession with the artifice of matrimony, the narrative of the virgin bridge in white as a “feminine ideal” - critiqued first in the brilliant Muriel’s wedding (which he also wrote) and then again in this film.

It makes no sense, but I’m not mad about it.

If you watched “Muriels’s Wedding,” you’d recognize this style. It’s a film style that was kind of popular with Australian directors in the 90's.

I think that song is the opener because that’s the ideal that JR’s character has been brain washed to believe is the way she should be.

It’s a gushy-coo 1950s song about worshiping your man and tailoring yourself to snare him and keep him happy, covered by Ani DiFranco and filmed as bridal drag. It’s so, so over-the-top treacly that, coming at the beginning of the movie, it sets you up to see that set of cultural expectations subverted and skewered.…

Because it’s weird and quirky and fucking delightful?
