It's not just how fans "internalized" Samus, it's actually how Nintendo portrayed her back in the day. She was usually marketed as a being comparable to Sigorney Weaver in the Alien films. As an example here's a pic of Samus from some Nintendo thing. I can't remember if it was in Nintendo Power or the Super Metroid…

I've been neglecting all my other games this past week after getting sucked into Minecraft and Plants vs Zombies. So I intend to get back on track by playing DQIX while dual boxing FFXIV and FFXI.
@MaWeiTao: Well they used to for Need For Speed: Porsche Unleashed. The interesting thing is that Porsche is the only part GT doesn't have, they still get VW and Audi.
