They didn't make DNF. They took everything 3D Realms had made, which was almost all of the game, and filled in the blanks as quickly as possible. Their goal was to simply get the game out - good, bad, or indifferent. (In this case: bad. Still though, mission accomplished.)

I don't believe there ever was an apocalypse in Borderlands; it just looks like it (the whole setting is pretty much a trailer-trash themed planet). Not to say it doesn't have its charm or color, especially in 2, but still.
Hot damn. Say what you want about the remaining ~95% of Blizzard, but their cinematics team are the best in the industry.
