Whats silly about using a hammer? Its my favorite tool. My sister once asked me to help change the fuel pump on her VW. she had tried a strap wrench, plyers ect, to remove the large ring that hold it in. I replied jokingly, "have you tried a hammer?" she laughed, knowing that I like to smash things. I get there. and…
The question asked where was the best place to own a car... this is tough. I love the roads in CA. Also, California is the capital of car culture... Never heard of a Colorado Special Mustang. Or how about the countless aftermarked companies started in CA, Edelbrock - 1933 Beverly Hills, CA, SoCal Speed Shop - 1946…
Your point about Turbos is a little off, they had been used in airplane engines back before WWII... WWII really refined the basic turbo charger. and 30 years ago many cars shipped with turbos. The deisel Benz I drive comes to mind as does the Shelby-Mopars and the Mustang SHO, all are 30 years old now.
Can you blame them? American cars have a reputation of needing more TLC then an "asian transportation appliance" Its ture the new car are nothing like older American cars... but when you looking for a "transportation appliance" you don't want to ever pop the hood. And when you know nothing about cars reputations go a…
Drive a 1 ton truck with a manual transmission. start out simple, drive it on a country road, learn that it doesn't stop with the brakes, only with a combination of down shifting and braking. once you've mastered this, lets move to a more populated area. drive in some traffic and remember your much larger then a…
W126... Similar story, got the car at 214k with a working odometer, odo broke at 363k... drove it for a year like that, did a transmission swap to a manual, so I had to change to a cable driven w124 Speedo. put that speedo in with 290k on the speedo, its now at 320k and counting. If I had to guess the speedo is 80-90k…
one would assume a Semi Truck...
Transmissions are not that hard. but they can be overwhelming. One of my best friends and I have done a few transmissions, but we will not do the job alone. its nice to have a second set of eyes looking over the assembly making sure everything is going per the book. Its much like eating a whale... one bite at a time.
A Compression test... OK, yes this is an invasive test, so its hard to do when inspecting a car, but it will be the first thing I do when I get the car home... on some questionable cars, for example buying an old toyota truck that wasn't in the nicest shape I asked the seller if I could test the compression. he agreed…
My dad had a similare exprence with a Chevy dealer. Back in 73 my dad was in high school, and worked on his family farm, as well as other farms in the community. he walked cash in hand to buy a new Camaro, the dealer told him it was to much car for a kid his age... He walked across the street and bought a Challenger.
My mom owns a Wrangler, and loves it. I thought about a Compass when they first came out... then I ended up with a used Dakota for a while. After dealing with an ageing 'modern Mopar', I've decided I will not own another one. This is coming from a guy who owns a 73 Charger... that Dakota ruined Mopar in my eyes. The…
Toyota not selling AWD cars with manual transmissions. When I graduated from high school I wanted to buy a Toyota Matrix. I had loved my Tercel 4WD all through school, and getting my first real job I though of replacing it with a Matrix. I saw the adds for the AWD Matrix and got very excited. Went to the dealer to…
Bought this car for $80. Via craigslist of course. When I got the car it was primer gray, had a "roll cage" made out of thin wall conduit, and side skerts made of rain gutters... oh and it didn't run. Took the car to my uncles shop and in a weekend i had removed the gettoy styling and installed a spare engine I had.…
