I support being conservative here, and one can do that by saying 11.5% is a “considerable” chance, or something like that. But if 11.5% is right, saying a fluke is the “most likely”explanation is clearly false, as 11.5 < 50.

Even at 1.2 sigma, there’s only an 11.5% chance it’s a fluke. So why do you and the NYT say the most probably explanation is that it’s a coincidence? Obviously 11.5% is far from definitive, but it’s also clearly less than 50%.
