Same here. Grew up speaking spanish (mexican) as a first language. I never understood puta/puto to mean a homophobic slur. Always interpreted it as bitch/asshole. As in “hijo de tu puta madre!” Happy belated fathers day!

I am half Mexican and have lived in Mexico, and I don’t think “puto” would roughly translate to “asshole” or “piece of shit.” It’s an emasculating term to throw at another man. And it’s a term of domination. I wouldn’t say it’s explicitly homophobic, but it is certainly often used as a homophobic slur.

Yeah, that was my personal experience too, but now that I’ve gotten around more and learned more about the word, I’m on the side of let’s just stop usin’ it guys.
