I'd say it's pretty first time friendly. There are tutorials you can run called guildhests that do a pretty good job of teaching you mechanics you'll encounter once you start running higher level dungeons. The community is also for the most part pretty good.

You need a like-minded free-company my friend. Community issues are always solved by that.

It is definitely newcomer friendly. There are tons of people still forming up free companies (guilds) and while you do have a pile of v1.0 people still playing, a pile are still levling up new jobs and such.
