A 6" crack in the hull is the result of poor engineering analysis, and an over stressed area that can only be fixed with steel and backup structure. A carbon fiber skin wouldn't keep the ship from ripping itself apart when it's hogging and sagging in rough seas.

The LCS1 is a disaster. Aside from the hull itself corroding, and the 6" crack in the hull that caused it to be dry docked for repairs, you can tell it was designed by people who know almost nothing about ships.

The LCS is unlike, say a DDG51, in that it's a brand new ship. When the Arliegh Burke hit the water, no one knew how to sail her either. Since the 1980s we've built a few dozen more, and every ship is (more or less) the same. Crew training and mission reddiness have become second nature.

They're both 'dissolving in the ocean'. The Austal ship's problem is in the water jet shafts, but it's been corrected. It was a combination of galvanic corrosion of dissimilar metals and the sheer speed that sea water flows thru, erroding away the metal.
