I am very much aware of that, being a major geek myself. That being said, there are some situations where that's no excuse. Have you read most of this thread? Have you read some of the other threads on this site under similar articles? Though there is some correlation, lack of social skills is no excuse for raging

Did you not read my original post? I never said that all geeks are asses. Heck, I'm a geek myself. It's just that I've encountered a significant about of geeky guys that were either asses or unintentionally asses.

PixelPerfect3 is right. Not all men are asses. I'm used to taking classes in which my gender is the minority, and the guys there are perfectly civil. I may not have been physically assaulted at a con, but if you think that rudeness and verbal harassment isn't hostility, then you're kidding yourself. I'm not going to

I'm a feminist (you say that like it's a bad thing), but not sexist. It is not an issue of being outnumbered by the opposite sex (I'm a history major and used to that), but a matter of being outnumbered by a hostile group.

I first read that as "China Unicorn".

Um, excuse me- when exactly did he "rescue" me? I can (and did) speak for myself. At the risk of sounding cliche, I don't need a guy's approval for my argument to be valid.

I understand what you're saying, but I don't find it patronizing in that the guy in the black hat is often used by the author as a self-insertion into the comic (or so I've heard). It's the author directly stating his opinion and less of a knight-in-shining-armor type piece, I think.

I tried to express that in relation to my local comic con on the Gizmodo repost of this, and got called a douche by a couple of the douchebags there. I kind of hate men today.

Saw this in the original Jezebel comment thread and had to post it here. Totally apropos.

I generally don't like to get preachy, but sometimes it astounds me just how hostile nerd environments can be for women. I read this great article written by a women who's a Linux dev and attends a lot of open-source conferences. She's practically required to attend them for her job, but she hates going to most of

Pics or gtfo. XD

It's my goal to find the male version of this. I've encountered one on occasion, but he's always taken. Curses.

They're both conferences attended by generally nerdy people, therefore I think I'm justified in drawing possible comparisons between the two. I've never been to one of these hacking conferences, but I regularly attend a comic con, and I've simply stated why a girl might be turned off from attending the con I attend,

I'm just basing them off of personal observations at the con where I live, and does not speak for any other cons elsewhere. Hope you enjoy being in the bad 50%.

Well it's somewhat better here than on other sites. Sometimes I feel like I've walked into Mos Eisley Cantina when I read the comments on Engadget, for all the unfiltered scum that shows up there.

We're probably underrepresented for the same reason why I always feel awkward at my local comic con- the looks girls get from guys are just plain creepy. Seriously, I make it a rule not to make eye contact with anyone there. The majority of the guys I encounter at those sort of events tend to fall into the following

And unicorns! Don't forget the unicorns!

No- they had autotuned various scenes from the nominated movies into "songs" and joked that they were "movie musicals". One of them was from Eclipse and kind of played off the "I'm Too Sexy for my Shirt" song, regarding Taylor Lautner. Pretty funny.

I was crying by the time they got to the whole "He Doesn't Own a Shirt" song during the autotune bit. FUCKING HILARIOUS.

Si, si, no me gusta tambien. Leotard + nude tights bodysuit + skirt FUCKING SAFETY PINNED to the leotard = MY BLADDER WANTS TO DIE
