He also must have been aware of the consequences if he had shot fellow soldiers and actively avoided that - something that says to me that he didn't "just snap", as you say.

Yes, the Mythbusters did raise a sunken ship with the power of ping-pong balls. It took 27,000 to raise a 3,500 pound boat. It's possible that the owners may have seen it - to use a Mythbusters term, plausible - but I doubt that fact.
