Good points! He was definitely aware of what he had set out to do, and how he was going to do it. That suggests premeditation to me. He also must have been aware of the consequences if he had shot fellow soldiers and actively avoided that - something that says to me that he didn't "just snap", as you say.

Yes, the Mythbusters did raise a sunken ship with the power of ping-pong balls. It took 27,000 to raise a 3,500 pound boat. It's possible that the owners may have seen it - to use a Mythbusters term, plausible - but I doubt that fact.

Did you not read the article? The Costa Concordia is sitting right on a rock ledge. If we move it any, it falls off and sinks, and we lose it forever. It's not flat like your picture says.
