Why is it only the PS3 has L1 and R1 but everyone else gives you the L2 and R2 as options? Heck, if I hook a controller to my PC, it does it that way too. Or better yet, I can remap them to whatever feels more natural to me.

I had almost the exact same reaction. Only difference is that I was 2.5 hours in, and realized that following the story missions, and after doing stupid 'date' stuff with contacts, I'd finally gotten my FIRST firearm in the game from a Jamaican.

Initial aircraft are super breakable. Later on, you'll get bombers (in Arcade mode) that will soak up an ungodly high number of .50 cals and keep flying. The Historic and FRB fights are much more realistic, where it's easier to kill pilots, gunners, pop fuel tanks, and otherwise explode or rip apart a plane.
