I put them on and smooth them over the nail, leaving the excess strip slightly folded so it touches my fingertip. Then I take a soft nail file and run it along the edge of my nail, essentially cutting off the excess.

I have short nails too and these work perfectly fine for me. Perhaps even better, I've kept them on for almost 2 weeks before (plus top coat) with minimal chippage.
