While I agree that the movie got it wrong, the fighters were based on these Italian fighters from WWII, and not on Jets. Given the Italian-heavy interests in this film before and behind the camera, the design choice may have been understandable.

Oh, I concur, however Dynomutt, K-9 and Hyperdog are all robots or cyborgs, so I cut Gir some slack in the organics-only department.
