I took it as “There’s not enough time to explain to you why I can’t ride with you to the wall only to not be able to pass beneath it because I am a half dead wight.” (Benjen has not been among the living for nearly all seven seasons).

It’s not because they’re two teens embroiled in a sibling rivalry, it’s just an extremely contrived conflict, and the writers aren’t quite doing a good enough job of covering their tracks.

Also, I thought the Marines and Navy hated each other, or at least engaged in bitter rivalry (much like the Army and Air Force).

There is no way to legally classify that.

That is “off the grid” for these purposes and I have also seen this. No taxes, no credit card, no bank account, prepaid (burner) cell phone. All of this makes it very difficult to track them down, hence “off-the-grid”.

Because society has set it up so that the parent who takes off first and ditches all responsibility for the child right from the start (usually, but not always, the father) gets no comeuppance at all. And the parent who stayed behind and TRIED, at least for a while, the raise the child, gets all the jail time.

Make them take basic human empathy courses for the duration of their time in jail
