She really could have had a career if she just lost a little weight.

Is it really breaking any new ground at this point to argue that Janet Jackson was unfairly maligned, and that people overreacted? Seems like this has been “re-litigated” quite a few times already. It’s like that podcast You’re Wrong About acting like they’re the first ones to point out that, say, Monica Lewinsky

Pretty sure Britney Spears was allowed to drive. If I remember right, that was part of the problem.

Thank you for reminding me that this site gave Melancholia a B+. A lower grade than Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. I guess Melancholia just didn’t have the total forgettableness of the latter film?

Agree with all of this. I also wonder whose idea this was? Would Netflix, after giving him a special, and him appearing on the Parks and Recreation reunion thing, be this gun-shy about letting him come back if he wanted to?

That’ll do, babe(.net). That’ll do.

Aaron Sorkin has written a number of speeches about how the internet is full of pointless snark, written by people with nothing much to speak of but who want to take shots for no discernible reason.

That, broadly speaking, black actors have historically faced discrimination? Sure. But I generally find it lazy thinking to treat racism as some kind of coefficient that you can plug into any equation that isn’t balancing. Why hasn’t X had the same career as Y? Never mind anything else, if there’s any difference, it

But Heath Ledger didn’t get some sort of ceremony-stopping tribute at The Oscars, like was apparently supposed to happen here. He just won his award, and the show moved on. And Ledger was only 28, so he was only in so many films, but he’d already gotten a Best Actor nomination for Brokeback Mountain, also had strong

Congratulations, you get your gold star for the day. Ultimately, audiences’ feelings about a cumulative career can’t be graded on a curve.

Probably a mistake to ungrey, but personally I preferred Hopkins’s performance over Chadwick Boseman’s. This was about the order of the awards.

Maybe if you want to consider the award as being cumulative for all his performances it’s warranted?

This felt like the Oscars getting too cute in a “let’s disrupt something for the sake of disrupting it” kind of way. There’s a reason why, in an industry night awarding films, the whole show leads up to awarding...the best film.

If nothing else, I’d bet he’ll be the first host in x # of years (maybe Trump) who doesn’t get the meaningless compliment of “gave his all, and was clearly game, but...”

Honestly, if “#MeToo, but for being a dick” is going to become a thing (which I’m ambivalent about, personally, but whatever), then it’ll be a little depressing to see it start the exact same way. A lot of apologies from people who “should have known more than they did.” A lot of sudden tie-cutting the minute it

“Your actions have made it impossible for us to keep working together.”

If nothing else, everyone recapping the show can publish their reviews early.

If all four acting Oscars are won by people of color, I think there might be a riot.

2nd (Vinnie Chase’s Jekyll & Hyde remake was 1st).

Good to know. I should rewatch this thing regardless.
