I always wondered if pilots were on lengthy, non hostile missions over open water would randomly do a barrel roll or fly through clouds for the fun of it. I'd imagine that they'd be slapped down for doing something unnecessary like that, though.

At the end of the day, "looking stupid" is a standard only defined by popular opinion. Now I'm not commenting on the functionality of the concept, but approaching it from a "will it look stupid" angle is...well...in my honest opinion, ridiculous.
