These mental gymnastics are always fun. Make sure to include Nintendo when talking about console sales so that you can be third place, then pretend they don’t even exist when talking about exclusive games being a Sony thing.
There were plenty of PS2 exclusives, but as far I know those weren’t the result of specific deals with Sony. People just made games for PlayStation because it was the most popular console and back then it was much harder to port games to other consoles.
And you’re not old enough to remember devs and publishers praising Sony for how easy the PS1 was to work with!
I have no idea what you mean by action, then. FFX’s combat was more turn-based than the ATB system that came before it. I guess by “evolving steadily” you really meant “the series was more or less static until it wasn’t.”
Huh? I think you’re failing to understand the idea trying to be communicated here.
Not really, no. Judgement is more or less a mirror of Yakuza, and a casual observer wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between the two. Whereas even a five year old could tell that Octopath Traveler and Final Fantasy XVI look very, very different.
The point I was trying to make is that BoF switched genres earlier in its life than Final Fantasy did, but nobody’s asking for anything but a return to form for that series. Which makes it a little odd that there’s so much stanning for a game that only changed direction after many more than four entries. Not even a…
This is more likely your brain playing tricks on your own memory. Final Fantasy VII was highly anticipated, and the overwhelming opinion when it came out was that it delivered exactly what gamers wanted. I had GamePro, and this is what it said:
FF7 was seen as a very radical departure for the series.
What does that make someone who says “This Final Fantasy is Final Fantasy and if you don’t agree you’re an idiot,” such as the author of this article?
“In a sea of shit, even a spoiled egg resembles a diamond.”
FF has been steadily moving to action games
It’s cognitive dissonance. When somebody says “this isn’t Final Fantasy” and somebody else says “yes it is,” that second person is only listening to the words, instead of understanding the idea being communicated. “This isn’t Final Fantasy” is just shorthand for the idea that so much is different that it doesn’t…
TBF, I consider pretty much none of the Daniel Craig films actual Bond movies.
There was plenty of room for a Final Fantasy Activus action-game series, just like Final Fantasy Tactics exists for SRPG fans. There was therefore zero need to replace the mainline series with an action game.
Like a Dragon is a great example. I love that game, love that it’s turn based. But I would 100% support somebody who said “but it’s not Yakuza, I want a return to action.” I wouldn’t talk down to them like this article does to Final Fantasy fans.
And the old ones - spoiler alert - still exist. No one is taking them away from you.
That’s a bit of a nitpick, no? If the NFL corporates came and said “our teams will be playing curling for the foreseeable future,” would it be any less of an issue for NFL fans?
