The down side is they went cheap and took the same battery box for the added weight when they could have went lightweight and out it more to say a capacitor bank and a smaller battery for the better charge/discharge and leave the battery for longer term storage. The diesel is probably geared way to short for more off-road cred. The lack of them wanting to register and crash test a new transmission/engine combo because of firewall changes is probably the cultrate of the wrong gearing for the bigger diesel.

I guess the hold off was consumer pushback (see Fisker) and tech to bring the efficiency to a smaller scale to fit and work in a car with gains. In large format like ships it’s as much a packaging boon as it is an efficiency boon.

It removes the extra weight and complexity of a coupled ICE and electric motor to the same drivetrain. Saving weight that way. It also means a MUCH smaller battery possible from a pure EV meaning again a weight savings. If this engine is small and light enough it can be a pretty big boon.
