Yup. Our helium reserves are dangerously low and have important use in medicine. Yet, the price of helium is controlled by the government and held artificially low, so we just keep using it like nothing is wrong. The fix isn’t as simple as “make some more” since helium can’t be manufactured like, say, hydrogen. 

Just another way to waste the limited supplies of helium that we have.

This was my exact thought as well; whenever you see stories like these they’re invariably suing for $8 billion in pain and suffering, this guy seems so sane in comparison asking for a totally defensible amount of money based on a reasonable interpretation of “free food for life”.
