Without knowing the financial details of TF2 tho, we have no idea if it actually makes money. in and of itself. It's a lead in for Steam adoption. So to claim it's an example of a successful f2p model is a claim without supporting data.
To be honest though..Valve's model works solely because it funnels people into Steam store. Any developer who doesn't have a hugely popular DD store will have problem following their example.
