I mean, 60 year old white men are constantly hassled and targeted by the police. Juries are terrified of them and see them as criminals from the get-go. And judges (you know, those other 60 year old white men?) are known to give them the harshest sentences.

Not to mention that I think the "normal" response to a situation like this, even if it involves a friend, is to not excuse or mitigate it in any way, but to be totally fucking horrified. On every level.

Oh good lord. This reminds me of a story my mom told me - apparently a registered sex offender has moved into my parents' neighborhood, and his offense was downloading child porn. One of their neighbors was like, "Well I mean it's not like he actually DID anything!" and my mom was like "…excuse me?"
