I wonder this all the time, but people are really surprisingly tribal. I am always shocked by how many lawyers and doctors I know who are ~45-55 have their personal identities/emotional well beings tied up with sports teams. This is right. This is actually a problem in the rulebook. The ref was fine.

“Fans” a re so dumb in this regard. Last year it was clear they were garbage, and they happened to play ok and did pretty well. So everyone built up much bigger expectations for this year, despite the fat they were still clearly pretty bad.
