How about just don't get a credit card? Seriously. Don't play the game of worrying about your credit score. Build a habit of saving up for your purchases in advance and amass a big savings account instead.

DC or the state? If possible, I'd try to find a short-term sublet for 1-3 months, so you can learn where the best neighborhoods are, etc., before you commit to a longer-term place.

You can find good deals on gently used, former lease cars. They're usually 2-3 years old, have maybe 30,000 miles on them. They're much cheaper than "new" cars and come with 2-3 years of warranty, which can save you tons of money and hassle compared to an older used car.

Don't give them advice? That's horrible. Sure, they won't necessarily use all of it—especially if it comes from insecurity, ignorance, or fear rather than experience—but I can't count the number of times that some nugget of advice from a wise man or woman turned out to be the one thing that got me out of a hole.

Yup, there are plenty of great, high-paying jobs in industry for people who know some math and science (and programming).
