There's a lot of debate here about what this poll was asking, so I clicked through and read the article. The poll was about people's belief in certain paranormal activities. So it wasn't just "do you believe there are people out there who identify as witches" which, yes, I've heard of wiccans. I'm sure many people

@Vivi21: Federal law doesn't care if Disney (or any employer) singles out a specific religion for discrimination. An employer can be equally in violation of the law for any policies that discriminate against religion as a whole - i.e. failing to provide religious accommodations for anyone - which Disney's do. Also,

@fifilaru: Well, all religion is obviously a choice. But this woman obviously feels it is important to her religious observance, even if all Muslims do not feel the same way.

@BringerofthePain: I agree that there are exceptions if Disney can argue that their "cast members'" exercise of religion would interfere with the job requirements. So if they successfully argue that the cast members are really actors and not just employees, Disney might win. It sounds like this particular policy

@BringerofthePain: My point is, federal law can trump a contract. So no, they might not have the right to fire her.

@theotherwhitegirl: They can't fire her for violating the dress code if the dress code violates federal law, even if she signed such a document. Telling someone that they can't wear a hijab that is required for certain religious observance isn't the same as telling someone to button their shirt or buy white shoes.

@la.donna.pietra: The court says it not get into the standing issue at the time the Prop 8 defendants intervened because, apparently, none of the other parties raised the issue. And the standard for determining whether a party has an interest that justifies its intervention isn't the same as the standard for

@kansassarah: Oh I expect more lawsuits. But depending where the case is, we can't predict how the judge will rule and if the opinion will be as well-written as Judge Vaughn's was. It was, as many said, a love-letter to Kennedy, the court's swing vote. Of course, in any subsequent cases, Judge Vaughn's opinion will

Ok, so this whole standing issue is actually really interesting (to this law nerd). From what I understand, the plaintiffs sued the state government, and these Prop 8 folks intervened as additional defendants. Now that they lost, it's not clear the state government is interested in appealing at all. Judge Walker,

@TheFormerJuneBronson: As lucky as you are that she's disappeared from your airwaves, she's still very much around. I was at some restaurant where they had a news channel on last night (Fox?) and there she was happily yammering away about something for a solid 10 minutes (it was mute, but it clearly had nothing to do

@Buggie: I am probably overly interested in the procedural aspects of this case!

@Hazey Jane: It helps to mention the Better Business Bureau in such letters.

I had a lot of experience with telephone call centers last month, having to call over and over again because they were just not getting my request right. After a few calls, I learned to just bypass the low-level operator immediately, because they had no idea what I was asking for and /or couldn't help. Eventually, I

@Buggie: I believe the notice of appeal has been filed, so the appeal will go foward (and likely take a year or more). In the meantime, the defendants can file a motion for a stay with the 9th Circuit, which, if granted, means no marriages until the appeal is resolved either way. I haven't read the arguments in

@YomikoReadman: There are plenty of stories of people doing crazy things like this and still getting further employment. "The rest of your life" is pretty melodramatic. Might there be immediate repercussions? Sure. But internet memes burn bright and die out quickly. I suspect she'll be okay.

@Ligeia: I highly doubt she would have won a court case based on this one inappropriate comment.

@Penny: I work at a firm that is too small to qualify for FMLA, but thankfully, they choose to write the same benefits into the company policies. But it's not the same as legal protection.

@karmasutra är svensk: Right, I think that's what she's suggesting. I'm not terribly familiar with the acronym myself.

@karmasutra är svensk: No typo. There were a lot of in between slides which Jezebel skipped wherein she first writes HOPA, what her boss said, and then shakes it around to show what it's supposed to mean, like @bookling said.

@Diziet_Sma: Yes, cherrypicking a single statement made by a single person in an otherwise lengthy post is clearly evidence vegans are all sanctimonious. Bravo.
